Introduction to Cracking the Code
Disconnnect
Tests scores show students cannot comprehend passages, but classroom participation shows they understand them.
is a 12 week intervention for Resource, ELL and SPED students (4-12). It is not a phonics program. It is a prerequisite to teaching older students who are struggling to read or are transitioning to English. For many of these students, they learned to read by giving each letter a sound. However, after third grade they need to know advanced decoding. This is the skill of recognizing when two, three or even four letters go together to make one sound. Teaching them to identify those patterns and the number of sounds in a word enables them to correctly identify the word with accuracy and speed. For example, “thorough” has 8 letters but only three sounds (th, or, ough).
